The Secret | A Hidden Bar of Neon and Greenery in Chatuchak
A neon-lit open-air bar hidden along a narrow lane in Section 1.
Some of Chatuchak’s most memorable places cannot be seen from its main aisles.
The Secret sits inside Section 1, along Soi 36/2. From the wider market lanes, there is little to suggest what is waiting farther inside. Follow the narrow passage, however, and the surroundings suddenly shift into a vivid mix of pink neon, hanging plants, music, and theatrical decoration.
It is a place to stop walking for a while, order a drink, and experience a more unexpected side of Chatuchak Weekend Market.
Leave the main aisle behind
Finding The Secret is part of the experience.
The bar does not present itself like a conventional storefront facing a busy road. It is woven into one of the market’s smaller lanes, where shops, seating areas, and the passage itself begin to overlap.
As you continue through Section 1, flashes of pink light and colourful decorations gradually come into view. Only when you reach Soi 36/2 does the full setting reveal itself.
This is what makes the word “hidden” appropriate here. The Secret is not concealed behind an unmarked door, but it cannot be discovered by staying on Chatuchak’s largest walkways.
A bar designed around atmosphere
The visual character of The Secret is difficult to reduce to a single style.
Pink neon tubing runs above the seating area. Ferns and other plants hang from the ceiling, while chandeliers, circular mirrors, animal figures, wooden furniture, and barrel-shaped tables fill the space below.
At the centre is a pink-and-white striped bar lined with glasses and bottles. The tropical greenery gives the room an open, relaxed quality, while the mirrors and chandeliers add something more ornate and theatrical.
Rather than following one polished design theme, The Secret brings together objects, colours, and references from different worlds. That mixture gives the bar its distinctive personality.
A daytime beer and an unhurried pause
During our afternoon visit, there was no live performance, but upbeat music played continuously throughout the bar.
We ordered a bottle of Chang beer and took a seat facing the neon-lit interior. After walking through the market, the combination of music, shade, and a cold drink made it easy to slow down.
The staff were warm and attentive, and the order was served quickly.
The Secret works well for a brief stop, but the atmosphere encourages a longer pause. There is always another detail to notice: a chandelier partly hidden by ferns, a mirrored bottle display, an animal sculpture, or the glow of neon reflected across the tables.
A photo menu for food was also available during our visit. Menu items and prices may change, so check the current selection at the bar before ordering.
What to know before visiting
The Secret is an open-air bar with a covered roof.
There is no air conditioning, although the space is shaded and ceiling fans are installed. Travellers looking specifically for a fully air-conditioned break may prefer an indoor facility such as Mixt Chatuchak.
The bar is non-smoking.
Opening days, hours, and music events may change. Check Google Maps or the official Facebook page before visiting.
Because the bar is located inside a narrow market lane, look for the signs for Section 1 and Soi 36/2 as you approach.
Add The Secret to a wider Chatuchak route
The Secret can be combined with a visit to Soi YIPUN in Section 16.
Moving between the two places gives you a reason to explore more of the market rather than staying within a single section. Along the way, the lanes, shopfronts, and changing atmosphere become part of the route.
Start with Japanese and Thai craft at Soi YIPUN, continue through Chatuchak’s market passages, and finish with music and a drink at The Secret.
Together, these different stops reveal that Chatuchak is not only a place to shop. It is a collection of small environments, each offering its own pace, mood, and reason to stay.
