The day you visit Chatuchak Weekend Market, you may open a map and find it filled with numbered Sections and narrow Sois.

The more you look, the more possibilities appear: shops you want to visit, items you hope to find, and areas that seem worth exploring. Before long, you may be wondering how much of the market you can fit into one day.

You do not need to plan the entire route before you arrive.

Start by choosing just one place to reach first.

This first destination is not a commitment to follow a fixed itinerary. It is simply a reference point—a place that helps you take your first steps into a very large market. You can pause at a storefront along the way or turn into another lane once you arrive.

Choose one place, then let your day at Chatuchak begin from there.

Plan One First Stop, Not the Entire Market

Once you enter the market, shops continue along both sides of the street, with more passages appearing ahead.

A bright storefront catches your eye. A sign farther down the lane looks interesting. Voices and activity draw your attention towards a Soi you had not planned to enter.

At Chatuchak, new choices begin appearing as soon as you start walking.

That is why you do not need to arrange a long list of destinations before your visit.

“First, I’ll head to Section 16.”

“I’ll start in the area where I hope to find a particular type of item.”

That is enough.

Rather than planning the whole day, decide only where it will begin. Once you reach that place, you can look around and choose your next direction.

The Section 20 sign in the photograph is one example of the numbered Sections found throughout the market. There is no single Section where every visitor should begin.

Choose somewhere that interests you. That becomes your way into the day.

Let One Interest Choose Your Starting Point

You only need one reason to choose your first destination.

Perhaps there is something you want to look for. You may be curious about a particular part of the market, have a shop in mind, want to begin near the entrance you plan to use, or need a clear place to meet someone.

If somewhere makes you think, “I’d like to see that first,” it can be your starting point.

You do not need to rank every popular area or calculate the shortest route around the market. Your first destination is not where you must spend the whole day. It is simply the first place you intend to reach.

Once you arrive, pause and look around.

Where do the lanes continue? What is displayed on either side? Does one of the smaller passages make you want to walk a little farther?

You can decide what comes next when you are standing there.

Finding a Section and then continuing towards a particular Soi is one way the market gradually begins to unfold.

Save the Section and Soi Before You Go

Once you have chosen your first destination, save its Section and Soi numbers if they are available.

If you know which entrance you plan to use, record that as well. Add the details to a note on your phone, take a screenshot, or send them to yourself—anything you can quickly check while standing inside the market.

A simple note might include:

• Destination name
• Section number
• Soi number
• Entrance
• Page used as a reference

It is fine if you cannot confirm every detail in advance. Save what you know and check the signs when you arrive rather than filling in missing information by guesswork.

Elsewhere, you may find a sign such as Section 25, Soi 2/2.

Rather than remembering it as one long number, save the Section and Soi separately. This makes it easier to compare your note with the signs around you.

The signs are useful reference points, but they cannot guarantee that you will never take a wrong turn. Check the numbers, look around from time to time, and notice the kind of surroundings you are walking through.

Turn Your First Destination into a Reference Point

When you find the Section or Soi you were looking for, you have reached the first destination of the day.

Before immediately moving on, take a moment to look around.

Which signs are above you? What shops are nearby? Does the passage continue straight ahead, or split in different directions?

Take a photograph that includes both the Section or Soi sign and some of the surrounding storefronts or junction.

A close-up of a sign may preserve the number but leave you unsure which passage it belonged to. A wide photograph of the shops may capture the atmosphere without showing exactly where you were.

Try to keep the sign and its surroundings in the same frame.

Details like these give you more ways to remember the place: “I was beneath that sign,” or “I turned beside that shop.”

This becomes your reference point for the day.

Stalls may close, open, or change their displays, so do not rely on a photograph alone. Check the Section and Soi signs again if you return later.

From Your Reference Point, Follow What Catches Your Eye

Choosing a first destination does not mean you will walk straight towards it without stopping.

A storefront may make you slow down. You might look into a narrow Soi or step closer to something displayed along the way.

These unplanned moments are not separate from the journey to your destination. They become part of the Chatuchak you experience that day.

Your pace may continue to change after you arrive.

Once you have saved your reference point, look at the shops on either side. Notice the lane other visitors are entering. Return the way you came, or turn in a direction you had not considered a few minutes earlier.

The passage in front of you divides.

One direction leads towards stalls filled with small objects. The other opens towards clothing displays. Whichever way you choose, you will not know exactly what lies ahead until you begin walking.

A starting point gives you somewhere to begin. From there, the scenes that catch your attention can shape the rest of the walk.

Little by little, your plan and the discoveries along the way become your own time at Chatuchak.

Leave Something for the Next Visit

Even while exploring one Section, you may notice more lanes than you have time to enter.

There may be a Soi you only saw from a distance, a storefront you intended to revisit, or another Section that stays in your mind after you leave.

That does not make the visit incomplete.

Save the Section or Soi number, and it can become your first destination next time.

Begin in Section 16 on one visit. On another day, start in the area you passed before. Changing the starting point can reveal a different side of the same market.

The aim is not to see everything. It is to begin somewhere and let your own interests guide you from there.

As the sky darkens and the shop lights become more visible, people and stalls still continue farther down the street.

Leave the feeling that you could walk a little farther for another visit.
